The Occult, black magic, satanic rituals, debauchery, and an array of frequenting 'female guests' and plenty of drinking. No this is not a Simply Ghost Nights party, this was The Hellfire Club of Francis Dashwood the 11th Baron Le Despencer's club in the early 1760's and was later dissolved in 1766.
Since early times there has been an open cast quarry on the side of the hill for mining chalk for the foundations, Sir Francis, the 2nd Baronet, decided to relieve growing unemployment in the area and provide building material for a new road by further excavating the caves even further.
The caves became almost abandoned until work commenced to make them more accessible and were open in 1951 to the public.
Ghosts Of The HellFire Caves
We were informed the spirit of Paul Whitehead the steward of the club still wanders the caves, on his death he left his heart to Sir Francis with the request, ‘as a token of his warm attachment to the noble founder’ and asked for it placed in an urn in the Mausoleum. The spirit of a girl called Suki is also alleged to still reside in the caves as well.
